I think, one of the main reasons, this story struck me, for the very first time I read it, was because it talked through its characters about a subject I'm quite fond of - art.
It is a good subject to include in a story...
The depths of human horrors are oftentimes entangled with the madness of pursuing art, and the ends to which one needs to transcend such art.
“The depths of human horrors are oftentimes entangled with the madness of pursuing art, and the ends to which one needs to transcend such art.” Ahhh yesss, agree and love the way you put it.
(As someone who grew up in the snowy mountains, an umbrella in snow always irks and worries me. Now that I'm done being needlessly snarky and unhelpful...)
FUCK YEAH! Love the ending. Love the atmosphere, and love the characters. Damn, I see why you got so high in the teir, walk tall, this is good! It has an almost Victorian feel of storytelling, yet wholly modern, and I have no idea how to justify that feel, but I really like it. Well done!
Ahahha yeah idk why I pictured the dude with an umbrella in snow, im in Florida and just imagine I wouldn’t want a bunch of snow on me making me feel wet and cold. Thank you for reading and the compliment! In my head it was very British, very Victorian haha but again dont quite know enough except to hope and pray the vibe gets across at least somewhat. I dont think palahniuk wanted super long stories but for some reason i had such a hard time making this one shorter and it was my only idea so oh well- im proud of the idea/ending and could tweak it overall in the future. Looking forward to reading yours
You gave him business, and that was good. Feel free to reach out if you ever have questions about snow and cold for future stories!
That vibe very much came through, I really liked it! Something about folks gathering for Christmas in a mansion for quiet mad science is classic in the best way.
The moment Van Gogh was mentioned I went "oh no" and the payoff was great. Your story is much better than mine, but I WILL make it available for you to read very soon. It is only fair.

Gripping stuff!
Ahh thank you! 🙏🏽
Horrifying! And also really well-written :)
🙏🏽 Thank you, was a climb to write.
The best pieces always are :)
It’s even spookier and more intense the second time reading it. I don’t even usually like horror but want to read more like this!
🖤 thank you
